The D.H.H.S police department was established on January 1, 1985. Police officers are on duty 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Currently, the D.H.H.S. Police Department consists of nine (9) sworn law enforcement officers and a number of police auxiliary support personnel. The role of the DHHS Police is to provide law enforcement and security services to several local state facilities, including the Swannanoa Valley Youth Development Center, Black Mountain Center and the Julian F. Keith Alcohol Drug Abuse Treatment Center. The department also provides mutual aid service to surrounding agencies, and the Black Mountain/Swannanoa community.
DHHS POLICE MISSION STATEMENT:
The primary mission of the D.H.H.S. Police Department is to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States and North Carolina, and to defend the rights of all citizens within the territorial jurisdictions. This mission shall be accomplished by providing law enforcement services based upon high ethical, professional and legal standards. Statutory Authority found in G.S. 122C - 421
